New RCL micro cylinder series with linear motor drive

IAI Product Presentation at SPS Fair in Nuremberg (25.-27.11.08, Hall 1, Stand 1-125)

In the context of its energy efficiency program “Green automation“ IAI’s new RCL micro cylinder series offers a more energy efficient alternative to existing air cylinders, for example the Bosch Rexroth’s mini-cylinder series MNT.

”Smaller and faster“ was the demand to the developers of IAI, the Japanese market leader of linear actuators and small robotics. This gave the impact for the new fifth series RCL RoboCylinder product line: a micro cylinder in pencil size offering excellent energy savings.

The RCL series with 24 VDC linear motor, available as slider and rod type, were designed for fast, precise handling as well as assembly of midget components. The miniaturized dimensions of the micro cylinder enables the design of a complete assembly line virtually on the desktop.

The linear motor cylinder with its sine-wave drive (3-phase coil) and compact design (no magnetism leak outside) as well as the integrated encoder ensures smooth, frictionless and quiet operation. This “softdrive sine drive” is based on a complex drive concept, in which encoder, engine electronics and external controller co-operate closely.

The three slider types RCL-SA have dimensions of 20 x 30, 24 x 36 and 28 x 42 mm (w x h) on the top and can position small workpieces with a mass of 100g to 2Kg. Various controllers allow positioning up to 3, 7, 64, 512, 768 or 1500 points with acceleration of up to 2G horizontal (1G vertical) and a positioning repeatabilty of just 100 µm. The rod types RCL-RA have piston diameters of 16, 20 and 25 mm and conform to the performance rating of the mini-cylinder standard ISO 6432.

Currently the most important applications are assembly and handling as well as laser technology, medical technology and the semiconductor manufacturing (e.g. inserted as 2-axes system in cross tables for wafer measurement).
